Try the browser introduction first
The Apprentice’s Test is a free browser mystery. It needs an internet connection and a browser, with no Codex, printed book, purchase or activation code required. An account is optional.
The author’s estimated play time is about twenty-five minutes; take it at your own pace or in shorter visits. Paper for notes can help. The written story remains available alongside narration, so headphones are optional. It is the simplest way to see whether this kind of investigation is for you.
A physical case still needs its pieces
Check the case file to see whether that game uses physical books. Where it does, prepare the reusable Codex, its own game book and any other pieces listed for that edition. Game access or a digital download does not include a shipped physical kit.
A case still in development may have changing requirements. Wait for released files and final preparation guidance before paying someone to print it. Do not infer its finished format from atmospheric artwork.
Find someone who can print
The No printer page is the place to discover the maker network and any currently listed offers. Availability depends on the maker, your location and the edition. A directory listing is not a promise of stock, delivery or a standard price.
If you arrange printing elsewhere, give the maker the exact released file and its instructions. Check that the licence permits the proposed work; do not redistribute files or private access codes casually.
Agree the details before ordering
- Which product, edition and files will be printed?
- Does the quote include every required piece and any assembly?
- Can the maker follow the supplied material, scale and printing guidance?
- Will it be single-colour or multicolour, and is that option supported?
- What are the total price, collection or delivery arrangements, and agreed timescale?
- What happens if a part is damaged or does not fit?
The printing agreement is with the maker. Confirm the answers before agreeing a job; a website game purchase does not settle those arrangements.
When the pieces arrive
Compare the parts with the case’s preparation list and read its assembly instructions. Check fit and movement before beginning the story. If anything is missing or unclear, resolve it first rather than trying to improvise through a puzzle.
You can read How to play while you prepare, and ask for spoiler-free help when needed. Keep any photographs or messages free of answers and private codes.
